Boveda 65% vs 69%: Which Humidity Pack Is Best for Your Cigars?

How Boveda works
A Boveda pack is a mix of natural salt and water inside a special membrane. It is “2-way”: it adds moisture when the air is dry and absorbs moisture when the air is wet. That keeps your humidor at one exact relative humidity (RH). No distilled water, no beads, no gel.
65% vs 69%: the difference
- 69% RH is the most common choice. Cigars stay a bit softer and more pliable.
- 65% RH keeps cigars a little drier. Many smokers say they burn more evenly, draw better and are less likely to crack or tunnel. 65% is also a good choice if you live in a humid area, or if you smoke a lot of large ring gauge cigars.
There is no wrong answer — it is personal taste. If your cigars burn unevenly or go out often, try 65%.
How many Boveda packs do you need?
A common guide is one 60g pack per 25 cigars of humidor capacity. So a 50-count humidor needs two packs, and a 75-count needs three. Go by the size of the humidor, not by how many cigars are in it right now.
How long do they last?
- About 2–4 months in a wooden humidor
- About 6–9 months in an airtight container (tupperdor, coolerdor)
- Unopened packs stay fresh up to 2 years in the sealed bag
When a pack feels hard and crunchy, replace it.
Tips
- Don’t mix different RH levels in the same humidor.
- Don’t use Boveda with PG solution or other humidifiers in the same box — they fight each other.
- A new wooden humidor needs to be seasoned first. Boveda also makes seasoning packs for that.
