Colibri Continental Review: A Classic Single Soft Flame Lighter
Not every lighter needs to roar. The Colibri Continental is a single soft flame lighter with a lift-cap and roller-ball ignition, the way classic lighters have worked for decades. It is slim, it fits in a shirt pocket, and it lights with a gentle yellow flame, like a wooden match that never runs out. Here is what you need to know before you buy one.

How it lights
Lift the cap with your thumb. That opens the gas. Then roll your thumb down across the roller ball and you get a steady, quiet flame. Close the cap and the flame goes out. There is no button and no jet noise. It is the same simple motion classic lighters have used for years, and many people like it just for that feel.
Why choose a soft flame?
A soft flame burns cooler and slower than a torch. That gives you more control when you toast and light, and it is gentle on flavor. It is also quiet and looks great on a table. The trade-off: soft flames do not like wind. Outside on a breezy day, a torch lighter is the better tool. If you are not sure which type fits you, read our soft flame vs torch guide.
What it does well
- Looks. The enamel and polished trim make it one of the best-looking lighters in the Colibri line. It reads as a classic accessory, not a gadget.
- Pocket size. At under half an inch thick, it slips into a shirt or jacket pocket without a bulge.
- Easy to use. One motion to light, a wheel to adjust the flame, and a window to check fuel.
- Great gift. It arrives in a gift box and comes in seven finishes, so it is easy to match to the person.
What to know before you buy
- Not for wind. Like every soft flame, it struggles outdoors in a breeze.
- Single flame. Large ring gauges take a little longer to light than with a double or triple flame.
- Ships empty. Have a can of clean, quality butane ready.
Care tips
Fill with clean, multi-refined butane. Hold the lighter upside down, press the can straight into the valve in short bursts, then wait 2–3 minutes before lighting so the gas can settle. If the flame gets weak, bleed the old gas and refill. Our guide on why your lighter stopped working covers the common fixes.

Who should buy the Colibri Continental?
Buy it if you light up mostly indoors or on a covered patio, you like a traditional soft flame, and you want a lighter that looks as good as it works. It is also one of the easiest gifts in our shop under $80. Skip it if you smoke outside in the wind a lot — get a torch instead.
